Diamond
is one of a number of insurers specialising in car insurance for
women drivers. Car insurance is often cheaper for women
drivers. Statistically, although women drivers make
about the same number of claims as men, their claims
result in smaller payouts then male drivers. Data from
Diamond suggests a number of reasons for this. Women as
a group, tend to use the car for shorter journeys and drive
at lower speed - accidents at low speed and in town
cause less damage to vehicles and people. The latter
leading to smaller compensation payouts to third party
personal injury claims. Also, it would seem that women
are more careful drivers - as 92% of all driving offences
are committed by men! And male drivers also account for 98% of all convictions for dangerous
driving!
It
is because of these reasons that insurance companies tend to
view women drivers as
"safer". However, this gender difference is more
pronounced with younger drivers - those in their late teens and twenties.
It seems that with older drivers, the gender gap tends to even out
- and by the time a driver reaches 75 it is the men that are
statistically the "safer" drivers.
